OUR STORY

Starlight Performance Camp was founded in 2016 by Dr. Roxanne Pinson, resident in pediatrics at the University of Calgary, and Dr. Andrée Vincent (MD, MBA), family medicine resident at McGill University. The two met in 2012 as members of the Edmonton Eskimos Cheerleading Team. One day, upon reflecting on their experiences in dance, gymnastics and cheerleading, they realized that they had gained so much of their confidence from these activities. Roxanne said: "You know what, let's do something for the kids!" -  And that's how Starlight began.

They founded the camp to share their thrill for performance with children who often feel restricted by their condition.  "Let's make them feel like stars!"  said Andrée. They registered their initiative under the Medical Students Association of the University of Alberta and got right to work. In their search for funding and support, they came across a call for applications for the Emerging Leaders in Health Promotion grant program. The ELiHP program is a grant program from the Alberta Medical Association which is jointly funded by the AMA and the Canadian Medical Association and its subsidiaries, MD Financial Management and Joule. With the support of the ELiHP grant, Starlight was able to kick off it's first camp in the summer of 2017.
